Sarria

hola people,
everybody keeps asking me about a ´terrifying´ downhill ride, what has deri been telling you all, it was amazing - wouldn´t want to ride up it though. We´re in Sarria, again we´ve done another easy ride, although yesterday turned out not to be that easy. Our 700m climb that we thought stretched out over 40 k was actually condensed into 20k and it just went up and up and up, and on and on and on. We didn´t push our bikes once though. The walkers had a better time of it than we did, they just went up and over the mountain (12k) whereas we spiralled around and around and around. 20k hill - how hard are we! took us 3 and a half hours though. We haven´t seen the kleptomaniac baglady, according to hans, she cheats and catches buses everywhere, so I think she´s just pretending to be pilgrim and goes back and fore the camino all year. We will find her though, if not in this life in the next!!!

We have been keeping pace with hans and had arranged to meet him in an albergue on top of the mountain, when we got into the town if you can call it a town that is, there was all of 6 houses there, but what they lacked in houses they made up for in cows, and nasty vicious dogs. Anyway hans wasn´t there, we found the albergue and waited for ages, at first the hostalera wasn´t there, which freaked us out a bit cos the whole village was a bit freaky, it was like a spanish hick town where outsiders are spit roasted or killed in some bizarre sadistic way. The albergue was rank, after we´d got our stamp i went upstairs to the rooms, at first everything seemed normal and serene, then the buzzing started. When we turned on the light we saw them, a thousand flies all over the windows and ceiling, it was the same in the bathroom, ok i may be exaggerating a bit but there was easily a hundred blue bottles in each room. They thought they´d cleaned the blood splatters of the walls but the flies could still taste it, everybody know that where there´s loads of flies there´s been loads of murders. Deri kept making references to the town being like the town off resident evil 4 (hari & kelechi will know what i mean - the rest of you that´s a computer game with zombie´s in it), ... we decided to leave.

By this time it was getting dark, but we didn´t care, we valued our lives too much to stay in that murderous fleepit. It was a bit scary riding in the semi-dark (and someone´s nicked my lights - i think it was weird klepto woman) but rode up another 3 big hills until we got to the next albergue - in fonferria. It was nice, and guess who we found - hans, he had left us to die in hospital del camino (murderous fleepit) and walked on ahead. The korean people were also there and an australian/english woman, dot dot dot !!!

We left fonferria today - which was awesome incidentally, coz when you go up a 20k hill often there´s an equally big one on the other side - which there was, we done 10 k in about 15 minutes. .....Anyway we stopped for second breakfast, second breakfast has become a necessity now, We stopped in samos to see the monastery, we had to go on a guided tour though, it was long, but you can see why people wanted to become monks ... the monastery must have been so much nicer than what they had at home. After 11´ses we left samos and now we´re in sarria, only another 111k left of the camino,

There's a portugal camino, but it doesn´t go south - all caminos head towards santiago, there´s a load of them, one from seville, the french one (that´s the one we´re on now, most people start from sant jean le pui which is in france) there´s one that goes from santander and from holland, italy and you can even get on it in england, obviuosly albergues are few and far between outside spain & pòrtugal though.

Have a good albergue here in sarria, we´re going to make pancakes tonight with apple sauce, we found an apple tree with really good apples on it and hans has bought flour and eggs. The thought of pancakes, apple sauce and icecream has been keeping us going for days, the albergue last night didn´t have a kitchen in it so our plan was foiled, but tonight!!!! Well got to go,

beth
